The Threat

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite constellation that broadcasts radio signals to users around the globe.  The signals are fairly weak by the time they reach the ground, and are susceptible to interference, including ‘spoofing’ – intentionally transmitting false signals to mislead or misdirect targets.  Spoofing has led to ships and aircraft being led off course and has paralyzed terrestrial navigation and timing networks – GPS provides precise time to the 5G cellular network, the electrical grid, the internet and financial transaction networks.  This threat has been heightened in recent months by Russian activity in the war in Ukraine, and is in regular discussion at defense contractors, inter alia.  GPS and similar systems by China, Europe and Russia are collectively known as GNSS, and are all similarly vulnerable

The core business concept of SJAWS is that we are providing a public good by detecting and alerting on GNSS interference, and there is business value in providing various levels of timely information. SJAWS will use our patent-pending algorithm as the core of a multi-input system. SJAWS is building a detector network with a lab system, and an initial deployment in a yet-to be identified location that has a lot of traffic and is strategically significant.

 

A key aspect of SJAWS is the ability to notify ‘interested parties’.  For instance, US Department of Transport might be interested in all instances, the Coast Guard might be interested in all maritime instances, the port security officer in Los Angeles might be interested only in instances in greater Los Angeles, and this interest matrix would be overlain with signals, e.g. GPSL1CA, L5/E5/B2, etc. 

 

An organization may acquire an instance of the SJAWS hub and algorithm for fully independent operation, or may receive standard SJAWS messages to supplement the private network, and may or may not choose to share alerts back to SJAWS, depending on the privacy/security concerns of the private network operator (e.g. military in active theater).
